What inspired your collection? we referenced strong details from different decades and mixed  them in modern unexpected
ways
What product is a must-have for you from your collection? our leather jacket “rambling rose” is going to be a staple for me – it’s super cute  it has tux style front hem and cropped back hem with extra long sleeves and cool zip detailing – kind of a moto tux style jacket .  I also love the lunar eclipse capelet which is alittle sequins number that will look amazing dressed down with a tank and jeans
Who visits your store? well the garner grace woman is someone who is quite stylish, someone who looks for pieces that are unique and can be easily dressed up or down  , a woman who can appreciate well made clothes that aren’t throw away or wear once items
What do you hope readers will take with them after viewing your collection? I hope they will want to get their hands on some of the pieces
Why did you create this company? Eva and I were ready to design and develop clothes that we would love to wear and we knew we would have to make the leap from the surf lifestyle industry in order to do that.
How long did it take you to set up Garner Grace?we have been working on garner grace since the first of this year -
Who makes up Garner Grace? Eva Zubek my business partner and designer extraordinaire!! and myself Karin Trevino
What inspired the idea? our last day at Reef we both decided we wanted to finally make the collection we would love to make – we both have worked so hard throughout our careers and always for other people (companies) why not work that hard for our own label!!!
What is the best thing about starting your own gig? the best thing is being able to have the creative freedom to make beautiful clothes – no limitations – meaning we can use luxurious fabrics like silks and silk blends and leather-  no compromising
What is the worst thing about starting your own gig? I think the hardest thing about starting our own collection is just figuring out how to get things done on a tight budget – we don’t have access to all the things we were used to in our corporate jobs – even as simple as a color printer – we have to send our files to a place that can print color and for a fee – things like this seam so simple but become complicated when you don’t have all the tools at your disposal – but someday we will… for now we pool our resources to get things done – favors from friends, etc.
Tell us something funny about the process of creating your store.well I just had a baby girl 3 months ago and it was during the time we had to do our first fittings so our pattern maker, fit model and Eva and I would do our fittings in my living room while my daughter fussed and burped and gurgled and I bounced her about the house – don’t worry the stuff fits amazing we have a great pattern maker!!!
What is the best thing about Garner Grace?’ we both are passionate about what we do, we care about every detail.. from design to fit to cost. garner grace is our best.!
What is Garner Grace doing for the green movement/environment?we would like to do as much as possible and as we grow we will look in to things to reduce our footprint – for now we plan to use  a handful of fabrics which will be used for several season  so that there is no wastage or left over materials – we also hope to use recycled paper for our hangtag and notions bag
What sets Garner Grace apart from it’s competition? because Eva and I have spent most of our lives living near the beach and are deeply rooted in the lifestyle, yet both of us have a great appreciation for high fashion – our goal is to really create a collection that combines the two; west coast beach culture meets east coast chic – we want to make beautiful clothes using the best fabrics and trims but that are also really informal and easy to wear – like mixing silk with jersey in our “checkered future” dress or making our sequins mini skirt with beautiful beading detail with a sportier scallop hem
Where do you shop?
on line I like Bona Drag, shopbop, intermix,  I love to shop NYC’s lower east side – shop, lolly, only hearts and I love thrift stores like DAV in oceanside you can get amazing accessories for a steal!!!
What products help Garner Grace to continue smooth business operations? we love our computers and our cell phones – Eva and I live in areas where our cell phone service is terrible so we when talk we get disconnected at least 5 times but we can text each other or email to communicate  when we aren’t face to face…
Tell us something we couldn’t google about Garner Grace?
just about everything – our website is still in works but should be up in running in a week or so – but really we love what we do and we are so happy to finally be creating what we love !
Upcoming Events to recommend? our trunk show in NYC sept 22 – 24 please contact us via email karin@garnergrace.com or eva@garnergrace.com to make an apt to view the collection

GARNER GRACE

Eva Zubek and Karin Trevino have been long time friends who have worked in the surf industry for many years.  Most recently they collaborated on launching a women’s apparel and swim line for Reef.  They quickly realized that with their talents and resources they could start their own fashion label.  So they made the jump to follow their true love for fashion and Garner Grace was born.

What is the best thing about starting your own gig?

The best thing is being able to have the creative freedom to make beautiful clothes – no limitations – things we want to wear.  That in itself has a different kind of energy.

What is the worst thing about starting your own gig?

I think the hardest thing about starting our own collection is just figuring out how to get things done on a tight budget.  We don’t have access to all the things we were used to in our corporate jobs.… for now we pool our resources to get things done. It has been amazing to see how many people go out of their way to help us. Our friends really do want us to do well. (Karin)

What inspired your collection?

It’s pretty simple. The collection is a mix of our culture and love, a beach lifestyle that has molded our laid back attitude and a true appreciation for  East Coast metropolitan style. Our coastal inspired design history has been a strong influence that is the root for our collection. We want our clothes to work in LA and NYC!

What product is a must-have for you from your collection?

The chainlink tee is must have because it’s a great fitting, super washed worn v neck tee but the back has slashed jersey and tiny chains that make it super sexy .  I also love the lunar eclipse capelet which is a little metal sequins number that looks amazing dressed down with a tank and jeans. (Karin)

Who visits your store?

Women who will be drawn to garner grace, definitely have style, and are keen for pieces that are unique and can be easily dressed up or down.  Our collection consists of well made clothes that aren’t throw away or wear once items, they are timeless and great investments.

What do you hope readers will take with them after viewing your collection?

I hope they will want to get their hands on some of the pieces. (Karin)

Why did you create this company?

Eva and I (Karin) were ready to design and develop clothes that we would love to wear and we knew we would have to make the leap from the surf industry in order to do that.

How long did it take you to set up Garner Grace?

We have been working on garner grace since the beginning of 2009.

Tell us something funny about the process of creating your store.

Well I was pregnant with my first baby last year, she was due in june but came a month early which was during the design phase and getting the development packages out to our manufacturer.  While I was in the hospital in between contractions, Eva and I were texting and emailing back and forth about designs to send off to our vendor. (Karin)

What is the best thing about Garner Grace?

We both are passionate about what we do, we care about every detail.. from design, to fit, to cost, garner grace is our best!

What is Garner Grace doing for the green movement and the environment?

We would like to do as much as possible and as we grow we will look in to things to reduce our footprint, for now we plan to use  a handful of fabrics which will be used for several season  so that there is no wastage or left over materials.  We also hope to use recycled paper for our hangtag and notions bag.

What sets Garner Grace apart from it’s competition?

Because Eva and I have spent most of our lives living near the beach and are deeply rooted in the lifestyle, yet both of us have a great appreciation for high fashion – our goal is to really create a collection that combines the two; west coast beach culture meets east coast chic – we want to make beautiful clothes using the best fabrics and trims but that are also really informal and easy to wear. (Karin)

Where do you shop?

On line we like Bona Drag, Shopbop, Shopnastygal.com.  We love to shop NYC’s lower east side – Yumi Kim Boutique, Lolli, Foley and Corinna, Only Hearts and then thriftstores are great for finding amazing vintage accessories for a steal! DAV in Oceanside is a gem.

…and some cool blogs we love are

http://www.knighttcat.com/

http://noirohiovintage.blogspot.com/ (which has a shopping website)

What products help Garner Grace to continue smooth business operations?

We love our macs. Eva and I live in areas where our cell phone service is terrible so when we aren’t face to face we call each other on ichat. We also can’t live without the UPS store in Carlsbad!!!   (Karin)

Tell us something we couldn’t Google about Garner Grace?

Pretty much everything at this point. We’re new and we’re just dong things that excite us. As our collections grow we hope to become more of a household name.

Upcoming Events to recommend?

We will be showcasing our Fall line at the upcoming Coterie show in NYC and Project in Vegas  and of course don’t forget to visit our website in February that will have a whole new look. Please email karin@garnergrace.com or eva@garnergrace.com to make an apt to view the collection

TKDANewsletter #38: Amy K Life Coaching

LIFE IS BUSY. And, yes, busy is good… BUT doesn’t it feel like there is just too much to do? That your “to-do” list goes on forever? Plus, with the economy still in flux, it seems like we have to do even more, but with less. I am always asking myself how I can do more. But my friend and rocking Executive and Leadership Coach, Amy K,(link to the tkdablog article here on her) takes a slightly different approach.
What inspired this idea?
A keen desire to leave my exciting, but exhausting high tech career back in 2002 and do something totally on purpose. I love momentum & growth and that is what coaching is about. It’s about getting someone’s soul in action. Part of it is touchy-feely with loads of self-reflection. But, there is also a practical, ‘what are you doing to DO?!’ part too. I love the mix and the results that come for my clients.
What is your favorite Amy K moment?
The moment a client really gets that they have their own answers and are capable of everything.
What inspires you, personally?
People who are serious about their growth & who constantly evolve.
How do you gain motivational ideas?
Listening to my clients – they are brilliant.
What is Amy K Coaching doing for the environment?
The best work I do for the environment is coaching my clients to reach THEIR full potential. For example, one of my clients is now a marine biologist saving the coral reefs. Another started a not-for-profit to help create a green world (http://reapcalgary.com/). Far more impact than my blue bin recycling.
What is the best thing about helping people?
The knowledge that I am doing exactly what I am wired to do – this is why I am on the planet.
Who can’t resist a Coaching Booster?  Not us. Not you. Click HERE to download. (http://amykcoaching.com/what_do_you_want.html)
What art / artists are on your wall?
A moody, sensual piece by Julie B. Montgomery (http://juliebmontgomery.com).
What product of technology could you not imagine living without?
The telephone. 80% of my clients are spread out across North America and a few further afield. I can coach anywhere via the phone.
Artist to recommend?
I’m in love with Liz Brady (http://lizbradyart.com)
What music is playing in your office?
Damien Rice. http://www.damienrice.com/music.php
Plans for the future?
To be vigilant in sustaining the work/life balance I have created. It is fabulous.

Our footage manifested into a spur of the moment music video to promote a party tomorrow night at the Horse.

Watch the video to see KILLSONIC make mass transit moves,
then come see the band perform in all it’s brass glory, LIVE at the Horse.
Did we mention there are 25 members in the band? Make some NOISE, people!
